Obituary

Mt. Olive - The Management and Staff of Serenity Memorial Funeral Home extend its sincerest condolences to the family of Mr. Ross Ammons ,78, who transitioned on Sunday, September 27, 2020, at the Novant Health Presbyterian Hospital - Charlotte, NC.

Ross McKenley Ammons, 78, departed his earthly home on September 27, 2020 at 11:13 p.m. at Novant Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Born August 22, 1942 in Duplin County, he was the son of Joshua Rasper Ammons and Hettie Adell Robinson Ammons. He attended public school in Duplin County.

Ross attended Northeast Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and worked tirelessly and faithfully as a member of the Men FIC before relocating to Charlotte, NC. He enjoyed cooking, watching Gunsmoke and just talking with people and this showed in his abundant friendships he acquired in Charlotte. Ross spent much of his adult life working outdoors and on farms. Ross was a beloved and respected brother, uncle, and member of his community. He was deeply devoted to his family and gave most of his siblings, nieces and nephews unique nicknames. Ross was well-known for riding his bicycle around Mount Olive and treating everyone he met like his neighbor.

Ross finally met his best friend and the apple of his eye and was eventually joined in holy matrimony to Rachel Walls on September 21, 1987. His father, mother, brothers Wesley Ammons, and John Ammons, sister Annette Ammons preceded him in death.

Ross leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Rachel Ammons of the home; daughter Michelle Powell-Jones (Henry) of Charlotte, NC;one son Shawn Powell of Charlotte, NC; 2 sisters-in-law, Barbara Washington of Charlotte, NC, and Jeanette Walls Coffield of Warsaw, NC. He is survived by 7 sisters: Jessie (Fred Lee) King of Kinston, NC, Audrey J. Ammons of New York, NY, Bobbie Ammons of Mount Olive, NC, Earline (Billy) Robinson of Mount Olive, NC, Jannette (Usher) Evans of Beulaville, NC, Lillie Ammons of Mount Olive, and Roberta Ammons of Mount Olive, NC; 2 brothers: Donald (Vivian) Ammons of Mount Olive, NC and Stanley Ammons of Mount Olive, NC; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 1 aunt Edna Louise Cockfield, of Peoria, IL, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Graveside Services will be held at the Rhodes Cemetery of Mount Olive, NC at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 3, 2020.

Services of Love & Compassionate Care have been entrusted to Serenity Memorial Funeral Home & Cremations, LLC.

Ammons Family, I am so sorry to hear of Ross’s transition. He was a really sweet & friendly person. Growing up in Mount Olive, I ran into him often, he always asked about the family & shared news of his family, always including something to make you laugh. He will be greatly missed. My prayers are with you during this time. Ross has gained his wings & he’s visiting with family & friends that have welcomed him home. Rest easy my friend, you’ve received your crown.
