Born March 2, 1938 to Rosker Davis and Lillian Williams Davis in Sharpsburg, NC; Betty Jean was the apple of her Daddy’s eye. She spent many hours, in her youth, working by his side on their tobacco farm. Betty Jean attended Elm City High School, where she was affectionately known as "Bean" for her tall stature. While in high school she played the trumpet and was point guard on the girls’ basketball team before graduating in 1956.
Betty married in 1958 and made her home in Rocky Mount until relocating to Goldsboro in 1982. While in Goldsboro she worked at Lane Property Management and kept the children’s nursery at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Betty was often sought by many families in Goldsboro to care for their children.
Betty enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, listening to George Strait, sewing and baking. She will be remembered for her beautifully decorated and delicious cakes. She had a unique sense of humor and love for all children, especially her 3 daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Mary Gayle Walker of Seven Springs, Cheri Varnell McRary of Hudson, and Shannon Leigh Fischer (Greg) of Clayton. Her grandchildren: Heather Lynn (Daniel), Ashleigh McRary, Madelyne McRary, Jakob Chisolm, Dylan Chisolm, Sam Fischer.
