Clayton - The Management and Staff of Serenity Memorial Funeral Home extend its sincerest condolences to the family of Betty Jean Davis 82 of Clayton, NC who transitioned on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, at the SECU Hospice House, Smithfield, NC.

Born March 2, 1938 to Rosker Davis and Lillian Williams Davis in Sharpsburg, NC; Betty Jean was the apple of her Daddy’s eye. She spent many hours, in her youth, working by his side on their tobacco farm. Betty Jean attended Elm City High School, where she was affectionately known as "Bean" for her tall stature. While in high school she played the trumpet and was point guard on the girls’ basketball team before graduating in 1956.

Betty married in 1958 and made her home in Rocky Mount until relocating to Goldsboro in 1982. While in Goldsboro she worked at Lane Property Management and kept the children’s nursery at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Betty was often sought by many families in Goldsboro to care for their children.
Betty enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, listening to George Strait, sewing and baking. She will be remembered for her beautifully decorated and delicious cakes. She had a unique sense of humor and love for all children, especially her 3 daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Mary Gayle Walker of Seven Springs, Cheri Varnell McRary of Hudson, and Shannon Leigh Fischer (Greg) of Clayton. Her grandchildren: Heather Lynn (Daniel), Ashleigh McRary, Madelyne McRary, Jakob Chisolm, Dylan Chisolm, Sam Fischer. Her great grandchildren: Ian McRary, Knox McRary, Vivian Lynn, and her friend and honorary daughter Skye Karr.
A celebration of life will be held on August 22, 2020, at 2:00pm at Serenity Memorial Funeral Home in Goldsboro, NC. In lieu of flowers please make donations to SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC or to a charity of your choice in her name.

Miss were a joy to know , and you always brought smiles and laughter to the beauty shop. I have thought of you fondly over the years , and have never forgotten your infectious laugh and wonderful smile. My fondest memory is from the beauty salon....I would be curling your hair with the iron , and your head would be bobbing up and sown to the music. We would laugh, and I would say, “ Now how do you expect me to curl your hair with you bobbing that head all over the place ??!!” You would laugh, and continue bobbing. 😅 You often looked after my boys, and helped me through the tough times of being a single mom. I’ll never forget when I left for Seattle, and you got my ficus tree from the salon. You called it the “Sooondra” tree. You were never forgotten, and even though we lost touch , you were always in my mind and heart. Rest In Peace, dear Betty. Heaven has gained an angel....a sweet , funny, music-loving, head-bobbing angel. With much ❤️❤️~~ Your old friend and hairdresser , Sandra
