Obituary

Curtis Lee Newsome, 83, of Stantonsburg, NC was born in Wayne County on December 8, 1936 to the late Deacon Tom Newsome and Mother Deartha Coley Newsome. On December 20, 2019 at 11:45am Curt answered the Master’s call and departed this earthly life into eternal rest.

“Curt”, “ Uncle Curt”, or “Pa Curt” as he was affectionately called graduated from Friendship High School in 1956. Shortly after, he entered the Navy and served for four years. Returning home, he was gainfully employed at Cherry Hospital for 30 years where he retired in 1993. In his lifetime, Curt has traveled many places with his God- children. He loved sitting in his recliner watching “The Young and Restless” and court shows on TV and lets not forget his DVD collection. Curt was a member of St. James United Holy Church. He was a regular attender of Worship Services and Sunday School where he routinely collected the offering. Curt also enjoyed his Sunday afternoon Walmart trips with Donnell and his end of the month prescription pick-ups with his brother. Afterwards, they would enjoy biscuits at Hardees.

Although Curt never married, he had a very special lady (Juanita Artis) in his life for many years until her death. Curt was a very loving, humble and caring person who loved family. He had a kind heart and meant the world to many. To know him was to love him. Although he never had children of his own, he treated his nieces, nephews and God-children as though they were, including rearing some of them as well.

Curt was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Ray Hardy Newsome and Jarvis Marion Newsome and a sister Dorothy Jean Newsome Elliott.

Precious memories will forever be etched into the hearts of one sister, Edna (Blair) Elliott of Fremont, NC; a brother, Jimmy (Carolyn) Newsome of Fremont, NC; his in laws: Mary Jane Newsome of Eureka, NC, Marjorie Newsome of Brooklyn, NY and Larry Elliott of Goldsboro, NC; his nephews and nieces: Gary (Bettina) Newsome of Blythewood, SC, Antonio “Tony” Newsome (Angela Ward) of Goldsboro, NC, Cathy Newsome of Brooklyn, NY, Angela Reid (Wayne Mundle) of Fremont, NC, Michael (Desiree) Newsome of Goldsboro, NC, Jeffery (Amanda) Newsome of Brooklyn, NY, Felicia (Ron) Mckinnon of Knightdale, NC, Yolanda Elliott (Raymond Williams) of Pensacola, FL, Beyanka (Greg) Lewis of Pikeville, NC and Darryl Newsome of Fremont, NC; “adopted niece” Angela (Todd) Gardner of Goldsboro, NC: 18 great nieces and nephews, especially Mariya Lewis of Pikeville, NC; 16 great-great nieces and nephews: four Aunts: Earlene Zanders and Mary Coley of Spring Valley, NY, Ella Spruill of Goldsboro, NC and Lenora Hodges of Jersey City, NJ: two Uncles, Brantham (Louevenia) of Grantham, NC and Hugh Morris (Delores) Coley of Laurelton, NY. His God-children who lovingly called him Pa Curt were also near and dear to his heart: Donnell (Barbara) Artis, Garry (Linda Kay) Artis and Linda and Melissa Artis, Steven (Terry) Millard and Reggie (Jennifer)Edwards all of Stantonsburg, NC and Bobby (Linda) Artis of Fremont, NC and a host of cousins, especially Ethel N. Barnes, Barbara J. Ruffin and Aronual Best; and friends especially Rematha Thomas and a God brother, James Harris.

We know that God is all wise and has a purpose in everything He does. We must commit our broken hearts to Him, who in his own time will enable us to realize that what so ever is best and he is at peace.

Sadly Submitted,
The Family

I an just now seeing this! I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Curt at Cherry Hospital. He was a kind and considerate person. He took good care of the patients and could always be counted on. I am so glad he got to enjoy retirement and was loved by many. Just as he was loved, I know he will be missed. Rest on! So many of those who took me under their wings when I came to Cherry have gone on. Prayers for his family!

“A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts, through us, they live on.” During this unfortunate time, I pray that God will grant the peace needed to get through this time of difficulty. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family.
